Hey Jericho,

I have been talking to this boy for weeks and he just asked me out. Yay! But that means our first date is going to be on Valentine’s Day…which is making me so nervous. I don’t want to seem like I’m coming on too strong, but I don’t want to hurt his feelings either. It’s not like we’re in love or anything. What do I do?

You’ve got the right idea. Keep things simple, but show you care. A cute (but funny) card and his favorite chips or candy should do the trick. On the date, do all the normal things you’d do on a first date—ask questions to get to know him, find out things you have in common, laugh. Keep it light.

You have plenty of time to fall in love (or not). Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to speed anything up. Just be you!
