''the coffee song'' is the story of a relationship from its start to its downfall, from the thrill of the first kiss to the adrenaline of the last glass shattered on the floor and walking out the door.
While there is no inherent meaning to this song, each phrase is left open for interpretation. I was inspired by a certain feeling when I wrote this song, though it is hard to explain. The best way I can describe it is the feeling of discomfort and confusion you might feel waking up in somebody else’s house. I wanted to capture that feeling of dissatisfaction in the lyrics, hence why there is at least one negative bit with every positive bit (“talk too much, call me Dahmer, I make things harder, not happy ‘till I tell a lie” etc), notions that are broad enough that the listener can apply them to their own lives in a unique way.
Even though the song has no meaning. It's about a relationship that after time, it breaks.
(Woke up in your new apartment – Time to go) It’s not to long since the relationship started.
(You’ve got those big blue eyes – Call me Dahmer ‘cuz your hearts so tasty) They fall deeply in love
(And I've watched you break – But all the thoughts I hid dug their way out) They started fighting, the relationship is now unstable. (Said you can’t trust me – And in our separate worlds we sleep alone) They once loved each other, but after a while the relationship was really unstable, they got tired from fighting and broke up.
I think that was, like, the best decision ever. It feels so emotional. Throughout the whole song, it almost feels like I’m going to break.
